BWFA VOLUNTEER DAY AT LITTLE PORTION FARM

BWFA is proud to support various organizations that are making a
positive impact in our community.

Recently, BWFA staff members had the opportunity to volunteer with The Little Portion Farm in Ellicott City, MD. We helped with a variety of tasks including weeding, harvesting, washing and packing food. BWFA had a great day serving our community, enjoying the outdoors, and learning about sustainable farming!

Little Portion Farm spans 3 acres and the farm functions as an “agro-ecosystem,” featuring a variety of plants and habitats to nurture this small part of creation. The produce from the farm is donated to the Franciscan Center in Baltimore, aligning with the ministry’s mission to respond to both “the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor,” as expressed by Pope Francis.

In addition to common annual vegetable crops, sections of the farm are dedicated to native flowering plants, in an effort to provide habitat for pollinators and other beneficial insects to reduce pest pressures. The farm also includes a perennial section where we have planted asparagus, strawberries, Jerusalem artichokes, and will eventually plant berry bushes and fruit trees. Our goal is not only to diversify the farm ecosystem, but also to be able to provide a wide range of healthy fruits and vegetables to those in need.
